WAQTAZAN

Roza Rakhne Ki Dua & Roza Kholne Ki Dua

What Muslims in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh say at sehri and at iftar — in Arabic, with an English transliteration to read aloud and the meaning — and an honest note on where each line comes from.

Roza rakhne ki dua — the sehri niyyah

At sehri · intention for the fast (niyyah)

وَبِصَوْمِ غَدٍ نَوَيْتُ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ

Wa bi-sawmi ghadin nawaitu min shahri Ramadan

I intend to keep tomorrow's fast of the month of Ramadan.

This is the intention (niyyah) for the fast as the fiqh manuals word it. The intention itself is in the heart — resolving at night to fast tomorrow is enough; saying these words is a common practice, not a hadith.

Roza kholne ki dua — the iftar dua

At iftar · Abu Dawud 2358

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ

Allahumma laka sumtu wa ʿala rizqika aftartu

O Allah, for You I have fasted, and with Your provision I break my fast.

Abu Dawud 2358, in its source wording. Hadith scholars grade its chain weak (mursal). The words «wa bika aamantu wa ʿalayka tawakkaltu», often added to it, are not in the source.

The iftar duas of Hisn al-Muslim

At iftar · Ibn Majah

((اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ الَّتِي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِي)).

Allahumma inne as-aluka birahmatikal-latee wasiʿat kulla shay, an taghfira lee.

(O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy which envelopes all things, that You forgive me.)

After breaking the fast · Abu Dawud

((ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ العُرُوقُ، وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ)).

Thahabath-thama-o wabtallatil-ʿurooq, wathabatal-ajru in shaal-lah.

(The thirst has gone and the veins are quenched, and reward is confirmed, if Allah wills.)

Frequently asked questions

What is the dua for keeping the fast (roza rakhne ki dua)?

At sehri many say the intention «Wa bi-sawmi ghadin nawaitu min shahri Ramadan» — “I intend to keep tomorrow's fast of the month of Ramadan.” It is the wording of the fiqh manuals, not a hadith; the intention itself is in the heart.

What is the dua for breaking the fast (roza kholne ki dua)?

The widely recited «Allahumma laka sumtu wa ʿala rizqika aftartu» is reported by Abu Dawud (2358) with a weak chain. Hisn al-Muslim also lists «Thahabath-thama-o wabtallatil-ʿurooq, wathabatal-ajru in shaal-lah.» (Abu Dawud), said once the fast is broken.

Do I have to say the niyyah out loud?

No. The intention is in the heart; the spoken words only express it, and the fast is valid without them.
